Without faith it is impossible to please God


I came across this post on another forum which answers so many questions of which the simple pewsitter would not be aware, but which is directly relevant to our times.

Let's understand the Mass a little more and what it is. We know that the Mass has four parts: Adoration, Prayer, Thanksgiving, and Reparation.

Being so, one must have the faith to do those things with any efficacy before God. As such, the Mass in essence has two essential elements: one of the Faith (which made the Mass), and the other is the due sacrifice given to His father for our sins. In order to receive the merit of that sacrifice, it requires us to first believe in him; which requires us to first have that faith. So the mass and its sacrifice for us in time is all about the Faith. And the Faith is all about doctrine. If the doctrine is in error; the faith is in error; and the sacrifice is meaningless. "Without faith it is impossible to please God" (Hebrews). St. Paul did not say without the sacrifice it is impossible to please God. He said without the faith.

One can go the rest of their life without the ability to physically attending the element of sacrifice in the mass. One cannot go the rest of their life without attending to the element of the faith that made that Mass. Christ said: "Going therefore, teach ye all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you." (Matthew 28). Christ did not say go out and tell everyone to go to the sacrifice of the mass, or else... Neither was the sacrifice of the Mass prescribed as obligatory in the early church. It is throughout time that the faith is the element of salvation. "Faith comes by hearing; and hearing by the word of Christ." (Romans 19).

In addition, where ever the sacrifice of the mass is said in the world, the merit and its faith transcends to all the members of the church throughout. So if one is sick in bed, the merit and faith of those masses is there present for them.

We learn in the theology of the Mass that when each Mass is said with the Church's intention, the graces go out from it; first to the priest, then the servers, then the choir, then to the soul or souls it was intended for, then to the faithful attending, then to the other members of the church throughout the world, then to non-catholics and pagans in actual grace to convert them. Each and every Mass this takes place; every day; all day; throughout all time zones. "For from the rising of the sun even to the going down, my name is great among the Gentiles, and in every place there is sacrifice, and there is offered to my name a clean oblation: for my name is great among the Gentiles, saith the Lord of hosts." (Malachi 1).

The error in our time, promoted by the Ecclesia Dei and indult crowd, separates the faith from the mass. Like separating a head from a shoulder. It becomes a freak and empty of life; yet propped up as if is alive. It is not. When we look in the old testament when the Jews were trying to introduce novelty and foreign things into the faith and into the sanctuary. God punished them. So too in our modern time; there is a wholesale punishment for those who are compromising.

However, the discussion at hand is that the mass is not a weapon of reproach nor of a weapon used as a leverage by priests to promote their ill gains. History is replete with people betraying the faith and making the mass as a banner of unity; it is not. It is the faith that give the unity.

Lent shows us this and Passion week and Holy week shows us the reason we look beyond such mundane things.

This is about the faith; the faith is about doctrine! You remove doctrine; you remove the faith. Men are mere vessels and instruments of that faith. Men can only help us get to God or take us away from God. Christ said respect no man beyond what they are.

Christ came into the world to teach us about His Father -doctrine = faith. Christ manifested the path for us to travel -doctrine = faith. Christ obliged his apostle to believe in him -doctrine = faith. Christ made conditions for those who believe in him will live and those who don't will perish -doctrine = faith. Christ taught in minute detail about his upcoming sacrifice and we must believe in the cross -doctrine = faith. Christ bemoaned of others who had little faith -doctrine = faith. Christ asked others to follow him -doctrine = faith. Christ asked the multitudes to believe in eating his body and drinking his blood for life everlasting -doctrine = faith. Christ blessed the good thief on his right because he believed that he is the Christ -doctrine = faith. Christ separated all men because what he taught -doctrine = faith.

"Without Faith you cannot please God." (Hebrews)

Christ was crucified because of his doctrine; not because of charity.

Charity rises high to the heavens; but does not get you into heaven. Charity is the bridge of ecumenism; faith is not. Charity pleases all men; faith does not. Charity extols God; but only faith pleases God. For it is faith that transcends all things and brings it to God. It is faith that is asked for in baptism; not charity. It is faith that the church obliges us to have to enter into the other sacraments; not charity. It is the faith that gives wisdom and all the other gifts of the Holy Ghost and virtues to be bonded with charity. Charity is a multiplier; faith is an absolute. It is the faith that gives unity; not charity. Faith, Hope, and then Charity is what is given to us in baptism. When in mortal sin, charity is first lost, then the faith, then hope. Faith is the only gift that teaches us about God; charity loves that which we come to know. Faith (the Blessed Trinity) comes first into our soul before we can love them with charity. Faith allows us to see what others cannot see. Charity in the faith is sanctifying grace; charity outside of the faith is human compassion. Charity is great with the faith; charity is lost without the faith. Faith moves mountains; charity does not. Charity puts individuals first; the faith puts God first. Charity is what is used to attack God; faith praises God. Faith and hope are the only gifts to get us to heaven; charity is the gift that is merited in eternity; not in this life. Christ said will there be any faith left when I come; not charity.

There is a context. God is one and communicated himself to us through his doctrine. Faith is what attaches us to believe in that knowledge, then to move our will; charity loves that which we know. Faith, hope, and charity. All three are gifts; only one can know God; that is faith; and faith is believing in that uncompromised doctrine.

Charity as a theological virtue presupposes the theological virtue of Faith. Therefore, there can be no Charity without Faith.




The word, "doctrine," comes from the Greek word, "didaskolos," and means "teaching." In Latin it is "doctrina".

The word "Doctrine" is used over 60 times in Holy Scripture. Doctrine is something that is taught which are principles and a creed of principles presented for acceptance or belief. For Catholics, Doctrine is a system and set of accepted beliefs. Catholics believe these things to be true and there is no negotiating them or watering these beliefs down into something that is more palatable for those who may not believe them. The essentials of the Catholic faith are doctrines that are unchangeable and are the immutable teachings of God taught through His life.

So doctrine is not something of "acquired knowledge", it is a system and a set of accepted BELIEFS; one, whole, and entire.


St. Thomas Aquinas teaches that faith means "to believe"; in which has two meanings — of believing and of trusting. In relation to "believe", something needs to be taught to believe. Christ is the only authority to teach: He is the way, the truth and the life, who taught his Apostles...and sent the Holy Spirit to teach all truth and the necessary system and set of beliefs. Faith necessarily results in a body of dogmatic teachings, i.e. beliefs -called "Doctrine".

To have faith is to “believe and hope for things taught which are not seen”. "Faith comes by hearing." (Romans 10). Which is taught to us -in doctrines.

Further, faith in God is more than a theoretical belief in Him. To have faith in God is to trust Him, to have confidence in Him, and to be willing to act in charity on your belief in Him. It is a principle of belief and action.

James 2:26
For even as the body without the spirit is dead; so also faith without works is dead.

Thus charity is that willing act moved by faith to fulfill those two commandments of our Lord.

When a baby is born and baptized, they have that faith whole and entire within him; along with sanctifying grace called charity waiting to mature and earn merit for themselves. Acquiring knowledge thereafter only enhances that faith and act of charity.
